Main Article on Scorpion Sting Question: What symptoms did you experience from your scorpion bite? Submit Your Comment Comment from: Mrs. P, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: October 27 I live in south Texas, the first scorpion sting last year was on the tip of middle finger. Long story short, my finger turned totally black, necrotic, and I spent 5 days in the hospital on IV antibiotics. It happened again 3 months ago, on top of the foot in my bed. I spent an entire weekend in the emergency room (ER) on IV antibiotics. Both times I had red streaking, this time all the way up to my knee cap, foot swollen 3 times the normal size, and I could not walk. The ER doctor told me once the venom antibodies are in you every sting going forward will be worse. I am still itching month later. Comment from: Lana, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: September 22 I was stung two weeks ago by a bark scorpion on my right hand between my thumb and pointer finger. I had intense pain, and numbness still. Two nights ago, I was stung again on my left forearm. Intense pain, itching, numbness, swelling and tiny blisters all around the sting site. This makes the fifth time I’ve been stung, and every time it’s been in my bed! Comment from: Sully, 19-24 Male (Patient) Published: September 15 I lived with a cousin on the Salt River Pima reservation. I ran out barefoot to my car in the middle of the night and was stung by a bark scorpion. It felt like a hot fireplace poker going into my index toe. I was worried because I have asthma and called the hospital. They were very nonchalant and just told me to ice it and come in if I had a bad reaction. My toe was numb for exactly 1 week. It was so numb and annoying because it rubbed against my other toes which were fine. Comment from: maier, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: August 28 I got bitten by a scorpion on my big toe at 6:30 am. Thirty minutes later my face and lips were numb. My body was buzzing all day into the night. Pain got worse with sharp pain as day went on. I took a gabapentin and that helped me sleep. Next day I started to get muscle spasms in my legs. This went on for 2 days, until I went into Urgent Care when I could not sleep. They gave me muscle relaxers and pain killers. Seven days later I’m still experiencing pain and spasms in my foot. Comment from: Ruth, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: August 10 I got stung in my toe a day and a half ago by a Buthus judaicus black scorpion, 8 cm long. I have severe pain in the area, so much that I am not able to move. With each movement the pain awakens anew and fresh. I am taking morphine tablets, but they hardly help. The best thing is using constant ice bags and not moving. Comment from: MEA, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: July 07 I live in Arizona. I was getting ready to go for a hike and put my ball cap on. Within 30 minutes I felt a hot stabbing pain on my temple from a scorpion bite. By the time I got home, I had numbness and tingling in both feet and couldn’t focus. Some drooling began after a couple hours and I couldn’t keep my balance. I went to the emergency room, and the doctor saw 2 pin pricks on my forehead. They kept me for 4 hours to watch for breathing problems, and then discharged. Comment from: Gg, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: July 07 I was stung under my arm by a scorpion, while in bed. It was painful. Now it is 5 days later. The bite surface is two inches in diameter. I used ice at the time and every day. I have felt dizzy and took Tylenol for the pain. My stomach is totally upset. I just took my first Benadryl. I have learned a lot about these stings and I plan to go to the doctor. Yikes! Comment from: Lynn, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: June 19 A bark scorpion stung me on the top of my right index finger. I had extreme pain at the sting site like an extreme paper cut. I iced immediately, took a Claritin and a Motrin. Tingling started in the finger and went halfway up my arm. I had electrical shock feeling in my finger and hand. Next morning there is still pins and needles feeling in the finger and hand. The pain only lasted a short time after the sting. Really no other symptoms. I've been in Tucson for 30 years and this is my first, and hopefully last, sting. Comment from: Eddie, 25-34 Male (Patient) Published: April 13 I got clostridium difficile colitis fall of 2014, and the doctor tried numerous antibiotics. I would feel better for 2, maybe 3 days, and it would be back in full force. In June 2015 my doctor decided to do the fecal microbiota transplant... it was like a miracle, C. diff gone! I can't understand why the insurance company wouldn't allow my doctor to do the procedure until I had taken many antibiotics first! Comment from: Heather, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: April 07 Thank you for all of your helpful insight! I live in Tucson, Arizona and was stung by a bark scorpion 45 minutes ago on my middle toe, right foot. Initially I thought I was stung by a bee, but found a small juvenile scorpion. I have red hot pain, itching and burning. From my toe to my knee is numb. Nasty little critters. Oh, I killed it for sure! I just got stung by a tan colored scorpion on my upper back. Hurts like a wasp sting but not as bad. I am starting to feel tingling on my lips and tongue. My left arm feels heavy also. I am icing the sting site and took Zyrtec. Hopefully these symptoms go away quickly but after reading all these comments I'm thinking I will be suffering for a while. Comment from: Jay-Cee 123, 45-54 Male (Patient) Published: October 14 Yesterday at work, I noticed something stinging my right buttock cheek. It was so severe, I ended up whining loudly like a child. Every time I would move, it felt like getting an injection by a doctor, who kept injecting the needle over and over and again. It was painful, like an electric shock, it seemed like the scorpion was attached to my body permanently without mercy! I got home early from work because I am sick. Comment from: bboop, 75 or over Female (Patient) Published: October 02 I was stung on my pinkie finger by a bark scorpion 2 nights ago. We reached the emergency room about 30 minutes after the sting. I remember arriving at the hospital, and I can recall some of the drive home. I asked my husband why we did not see a doctor. He tried to help me remember the nurse, the doctor, the physician’s assistant, the room, but I had no memory of an almost 4-hour period of time. The pain was extremely intense for about 15 hours. Except for the pinkie finger the numbness was gone after 24 hours. Comment from: Geneva, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: September 17 I was stung on my right wrist about 10:30 am outside San Antonio by a striped bark scorpion hiding in a pool screen cleaner. At first it felt like I was being shocked by electricity, it was a moderate tingling and numbing sensation, and the tingling and numbness went up to my elbow. The sensation was annoying me all day and I went to bed still numb and tingling. I woke up next morning to no more sensation. I’d say the pain level was 4 to 5. Red wasp sting is was way worse than bark scorpion; bad pain. Comment from: StungNAz, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: September 13 I got stung by a scorpion on the side of my big toe. I had excruciating pain, was getting a handle on the pain, and then read to wash it with soap and water. Boy, I wish I hadn’t, it went from bad to unbearable. About 3 days I had numbness and tingling, like the painful part when your leg had fallen asleep and it starts to come back awake, but just doesn’t stop. I lost the nail after a couple months. The 2nd time happened last night, stung on the bottom of my toe, like stepping on a needle. Toe is numb, and the back of my throat has felt numb as well as the tip of my tongue. Comment from: DJD, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: September 04 I live in Mesa, Arizona. I put my hand into a glove with an adult scorpion and was stung multiple times. A couple hours of intense pain and then my 3rd and 4th fingers went completely numb. Good news: no more pain. Bad news: 2 weeks later the numbness has not diminished at all. My fingers feel as though splinted and wrapped in thick gauze. One week after the strings, 5 red dots appeared all within a 1/2”. For 2 1/2 days after, my face felt as though I was wearing a mask and my teeth hurt. Comment from: Uni, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: September 04 I live in Maricopa, Arizona in new housing that used to be pecan groves. I see bark scorpions every year. My first sting was 3 days ago. I stepped on it. The pain was excruciating! My boyfriend instantly gave me Advil and a Percocet. Online home remedy said to use raw onion and told us why. The onion took 90 percent of the pain away immediately. I had severe tingling and numbness to my knee. Tingling was gone by day 2. Now day 3 my ankle and middle toes are still completely numb. I have nausea and lethargy still. Raw white onion works, I was skeptical too. Comment from: AZ mom, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: August 27 I felt something on my knee at 2 AM. I brushed it off and immediately felt a sharp intense stinging in my palm. I knew right away it must have been a scorpion. Burning, tingling and muscle twitches lasted over 24 hours, and extended down to the tips of my fingers and up to my elbow. Pain was intense, even with ibuprofen and continuous cold compresses and ice. I awakened on day 2 to the severe symptoms being gone, but fingers distal to the sting are still tingly and sensitive or completely numb. Comment from: JuJu, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: August 14 I was stung last week by a momma scorpion who was hidden on my yard gate chain. She had babies on her back! She really popped it to me. It was the 4th time I’d ever been hit. By far the worst. Throbbing pain on my finger to start off the chain of other symptoms... sinus clogging, numbness in mouth, lips and tongue, body aches, fever, and jitters very bad. I was alone, washed the bite area, soaked in vinegar, and took aspirin and an allergy pill. But let me tell you, it kept me awake all night. QUESTION Emotional trauma is best described as a psychological response to a deeply distressing or life-threatening experience. See Answer Comment from: sknjms, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: July 08 I had some of the worst pain possible from the scorpion bite. I was stung for the first time by a bark scorpion on my left ring finger. I've experienced a lot of different pains in my life, like kidney stones, post-surgical pain with not enough medicines, etc. Let me tell you, this was the absolute worst, because nothing hardly touched it, except ice. The pain can be likened to getting shocked by a Taser that is stuck in the on position for hours on end. It was a good 12 hours with the pain on a 15 (scale of 1 to 10). Expect numbness afterwards. Comment from: Terri, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: June 26 I was pulling weeds in my yard in Arizona and didn’t notice that I had been stung by a scorpion until later that night when my ring finger swelled up by my fingernail. After four weeks my fingernail fell off but there was a thinner new nail under that nail. Then that new nail fell off after I was soaking my hand in Epsom salts, and pus came out from my nail bed. All the pus is gone but my first joint in my ring finger still aches and my finger swells six months later. Comment from: Attica750 , 25-34 Female (Patient) Published: June 25 I live in Arizona so scorpions are quite common. I was picking up the back yard and ended up getting stung on my pinky by a bark scorpion. It felt as if I placed my hand on a hot stove. My finger became numb, and after an hour the numbness and pain ran all the way up my arm past my elbow. There was no mark or swelling, only pain all night. I waited it out and tried cold compress but had no relief. Comment from: Lynn, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: June 12 I was stung on the middle finger by a small aggressive tan colored scorpion, small pinchers, and long tail. I had extreme pain. Within half an hour while waiting at hospital emergency room, two fingers were throbbing and blue, and I had extremely painful electric shock spreading to the hand and within two hours to my arm. I had no sleep that night; restless pacing up and down and crying with pain. Now, 58 hours later, the pain in my arm better but middle finger and hand still has the sensation of painful electric shock. No pain killer helps. Wonder how long still. Comment from: Jrob, 19-24 Male (Patient) Published: June 12 I’m from Texas and I was stung 2 times by a wood scorpion, once near my left kneecap and once near the ‘family jewels.’ The pain was immediate and only lasted a little while but burned for 3 to 4 more hours. It also left a tingling weird sensation in my mouth. Comment from: House98, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: June 06 I was stung by a brown scorpion this evening. I had put my hand in the kitchen sink to throw away 2 used tea bags. Apparently the little thing was in there. It stung my right hand bottom part in between fingers. Initially I felt like I had a piece of glass in my finger. Then I saw the scorpion fall to the ground. My fiance who’s in the medical field quickly put ice on the sting, and then gave me some Motrin and Benadryl. The ice helped and the pain subsided but now I have the burning so bad on my hand. Comment from: Drew, 25-34 Female (Patient) Published: May 10 I was stung by a scorpion 2 or 3 times on both my feet last night at about 1 am. It hurt a lot few minutes after the sting but later my whole left leg had pins and needles, then my right foot up to the knee started feeling the same. About 12 hours later I was in pain and couldn't touch my leg. I took a shower and my loofah felt like razor blades running up and down my legs. I never felt sick, never had nausea, and throat never felt swollen. Even the spots I was stung aren’t even swollen. Not sure what to do. Comment from: Al, 65-74 Male (Patient) Published: May 08 While lying on the floor I felt a burning stinging sensation on my right finger from the scorpion bite. About 2 hours later my finger, hand and lower arm felt like an electric shock was going through it. Two hours after that my whole arm was numb, tingling and burning. Six hours later the pain is still very intense. My right arm is completely useless at this time. I don't plan to seek medical attention at this time. Will see how it goes tonight. We are in Waddell, Arizona, and I did not find the scorpion. Comment from: Bonnie Obonetse , 25-34 Male (Patient) Published: April 08 I live in Botswana and was 10 days ago stung by a black scorpion (approximately 7 cm in length) on my right foot. The pain was immediately excruciating and quickly spread from my foot to my spine in less than 20 minutes. My wife rushed me to the emergency room where I was given a tetanus booster shot and pethidine for the pain. My symptoms included inflamed lymph nodes, swollen throat, tingling sensations in the mouth, inability to pass urine, and swollen foot. I am now 11 days into recovery and still can’t walk. Hate scorpions. Comment from: Mum4d, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: March 29 I must have had it bad. A bark scorpion stung me 7 times down the middle of my back. Long, horrible story later - poison control told my husband to rush me to the emergency room. By the time we got there I had no control of my muscles, I couldn’t walk, talk, drooled and chewed my tongue up. They said I was foaming from my mouth. I had 2 doses of anti-venom that was under trial, I think it was horse serum. Ten years later I am looking to see if anyone has nerve damage from severe scorpion stings. Comment from: Jmendez, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: September 05 I was stung by a bark scorpion a couple of weeks ago and just tonight noticed my pinky toenail was literally lifting off. It is come completely off and other then the scorpion sting I have had no trauma to it. The scorpion stung me on the side of my foot near my toe so I’m wondering if the trauma from the toxins and the numbness caused from the sting could be the reason. After a couple of weeks my foot is still partially numb where it stung me. Comment from: SctAZ, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: August 01 I live in Mesa, Arizona and I got stung late night outside. I felt a severe sensation of pain like I stepped on a needle, and I freaked after seeing a 3 inch scorpion. The pain in my foot was excruciating. The pain moved up my thigh to my groin. I used ibuprofen and an ice pack. I felt tingling in both hands and my tongue was numb too and water tasted like vinegar. I was up all night, and in extreme pain for 48 hours, and felt a little better after 72 hours. It was the worst pain ever, and the doctor was no help! Couldn’t walk on it for 2 days. Comment from: Roxy, 25-34 Female (Patient) Published: July 26 The first scorpion bite made a small red bump on my mid forearm, similar to a mosquito bite. After an hour or so, a pink ring formed around the red bump. A few hours later, the pink discoloration started migrating down my arm, seemingly following a vein. Hours later, my fingers started to feel numb, then my hand, then part of my forearm. Then it slowly went away by the end of the day. Second sting was on my mid-thigh. Same red bump, with slight pinkish discoloration around it. But that was it. Comment from: Matty, 45-54 Male (Patient) Published: July 25 I have tingling mouth, tongue, fingers and toes because of the scorpion bite. Comment from: Dawnstar, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: July 24 At 11:00 PM I got stung by a scorpion in my bed on my ankle. We have 1 to 2 inch bark scorpion here in Arizona. The pain kept me up all night. It is noon now and the pain is still a 15 on a scale from 1 to 10. No swelling or discoloration in the area. Just on fire and feels like it is being put out with a dull knife. I have pain up to the knee. I’ve read all the other posts. Never mind sticking this out, I’m going for the pain medicines. I’m in horrific pain, haven’t slept and feel crabby. I agree with the others. When you see one kill it. Comment from: Alan, 45-54 Male (Patient) Published: July 06 I took a good scorpion sting to the thumb 6 days ago. My thumb is still completely numb and I have noticed that I am in a horrible depressed, angry mood ever since. I am not sure if it is related or not, very odd. Comment from: madrw, 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: April 10 I had extreme lower back pain, swelling of the stomach, itching and burning around the scorpion bite area, loss of appetite, strong headaches, numbness in arms and legs, and cramping in legs and knees. Comment from: Scotty, 65-74 Male (Patient) Published: March 27 About an hour ago (3:30 am), I woke up feeling something crawling on top of my bald head. I swept it off and heard it hit the wall at the foot of my bed. After turning on the light I found a dazed 2 inch brown scorpion with dark grey back. Bark scorpion, maybe. I put it into a plastic container. I had mild pain, like a scratch on top of my head. Sting site now feels like a slight bee sting. I applied Benadryl cream to the sting area. We have lived in Buckeye, Arizona for two years. We have regular, bimonthly, pest control treatments. This is the first scorpion sting I've experienced, hopefully the last. Only the second we've seen in the house. Not planning to seek medical attention. We'll see. Comment from: Tooie, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: February 21 I had a scorpion crawl in my shoe and upon taking three steps I felt a sharp sting. A 911 call brought the firemen and they insisted that I go to the emergency room. Lucky I did. My leg started to become numb and the pain excruciating, yes both numbness and pain, it brought on a motor and vocal tic I experience occasionally, and the doctors were afraid that it would become permanent. A nightmare all around. Recent pain in my leg and arms make me wonder if they could be connected. I was told that the antivenin is pricey, about USD 3000, but I encourage any parent of small children to insist on it. Without it and with massive doses of opiates the pain lasted for more than a week. Comment from: Lynne , 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: October 04 I just got stung by an Arizona scorpion on the thigh. It is very painful. I have read that the pain can last up to 10 days. I hope not, because I am extremely tired and want to go to bed but the pain is keeping me awake. I took one of my anti-anxiety pills to help calm me down. But I still feel weird all over. Comment from: Kay, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: June 29 While moving some debris outside, I was stung on the finger by a striped bark scorpion. Texas brown. It was a painful bite felt like a wasp sting, and caused mild numbing of tongue for a couple of hours. Pain on finger lasted 24 hours. Comment from: Big Buns, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: June 21 I was sitting in my chair and felt something fall onto my neck shoulder. I swatted it and realized it was a small dark scorpion. The pain was immediate and excruciating. I called my husband who said he didn't see anything, and that I was imagining things. Later that evening I had a blotchy red and white rash, my tongue hurt and my throat was irritated. I asked my husband to call poison control. He said no. Now I have difficulty talking, eating and have severe pain at the base of my tongue, my throat and the tip of my tongue is numb and tingly. I also have a killer earache on my right side just above the bite. It itches and burns along the path from my right neck/shoulder to my ear. My ear has burning stabbing pain and my throat and tongue are also burning with stabbing pains. It has lasted about 4 days now without subsiding. Comment from: CreezB, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: May 02 I was bitten by a yellow bark scorpion on my pinkie finger one night before bed. I felt the immediate poke followed by terrible pain. It felt like I was being stung anew ever two minutes. Intense pain lasted for 14 hours; I couldn't sleep or think straight. After 14 hours pain lessened significantly though and I was able to sleep. I felt human again at 24 hour mark. Now a month later this morning the numbness and slight pain and tenderness returned. Comment from: Laraska, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: March 07 Two weeks ago, I was stung 3 times by a scorpion; on the cheek, upper left arm, and right thumb. The reaction at each site was different, with the thumb being the worst. The pain in the cheek and left arm went away after about 6 to 8 hours. The pain in the thumb lasted about 24 hours, with another 48 hours of numbness and, if touched, tingling like an electrical current running through it. A hard bump developed at each site after 3 or 4 days. They have gradually worsened, and they are still present two weeks after the sting (with no signs of going away). Comment from: Female (Patient) Published: October 25 I got stung by the same scorpion on the same hand. Oh and I’m 8. The way it happened the first sting, when I flipped my pillow I was singing and looked over somewhere else for a minute. I touched my other pillow and it stung me. My dad and I had no idea what happened but after at least 18 minutes the pain went away. The next one was when I was talking to my friend on my laptop. I felt something on my shoulder. I looked over and I saw it. I didn't realize it was a scorpion because it scared me. I flung it off my shoulder and it landed in my corner. But it stung me on my ring finger. My friend kept saying 'Oh my goodness, are you okay?' I kept saying I’m fine and I ran to my mom. She found the scorpion. It was black and tan. She killed it, and it had a pretty long tail. She put mustard on it and I was fine after a while. The scorpion stings don't hurt too much. But a few minutes ago I hallucinated. It wasn't too bad, it was just of a black widow on my floor. I told my dad and we didn't find it anywhere! So now my head hurts and I can't describe the pain. Comment from: svenskasandy, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: September 20 I got stung by a scorpion the first time on my left back side. It felt like a nail was hammered into my back. After that I had nausia for months, my finger nails developed ridges instead of being smooth. My two longest fingers had severe pain and developed big bumps of pain on each side. I developed a breast lump that grew fast, and my right breast has shrunk. My right side experiences lots of nerve pain that moves all over me.I get sharp shooting pains all over, even on the left side due to the first sting. It is bad. Comment from: kat, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: December 29 Holidaying in Mexico, I think I was bitten by a scorpion in the middle of the night. The next morning my left eyelid was droopy and red and puffy and stung like a chemical burn. Also, the left side of my face felt numb below my eye. Then on day 2, a rash developed on the left side of my neck and down my left shoulder and arm. It was a burning sensation and it stung. I was extremely irritated. Also, my legs developed a rash inside my skin where my blood seemed to be red and white blotches. Finally, as that disappeared, a surface rash appeared on my legs and on most parts of my body except my chest, breasts, and stomach down to my crotch. It is now day 8 and I still have the rash but not as burning and skin is now itchy and I think starting to heal. Comment from: Az mom and nurse, 7-12 Female (Caregiver) Published: September 29 My son was bit by a scorpion twice on his check at age 10. He had no problems, I gave Benadryl and monitored. Two hours later he was bit on tip of his finger, and pain increased fast radiating to shoulder, and to the other arm, then legs. He could not walk, had strabismus and seizures. Once we entered the emergency room (ER) he was given two bags of anti-venom and discharged after 3 hours. If the numbness tingling radiates to other areas, or patient has difficulty breathing, rapid eye movements or a change in their mood/behavior go to ER. He broke out in hives every day after sting for a month. Comment from: Wt426, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: September 15 I got stung by a bark scorpion at 4 am while asleep, behind my knee. Then I saw the scorpion and killed it. Comment from: orod, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: July 17 I was stung by a small light brown scorpion outside my front concrete patio as I was moving my trash can. It felt like a big needle pierced the tip of my right 2nd toe. I ran inside and put ice on it immediately and then washed it with soap and water. After about 15 to 20 minutes the sting wasn't so strong anymore. I could still feel it but not as intense. It swelled the tip of the toe but nothing else. It was a bit shaky because I didn't know how I was going to react but nothing happened. On and off ice really helped. Comment from: CostaRicaRick, 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: April 28 I have lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and have been bitten by scorpions many times. Usually the lips and gums go numb for a little while, and the site of the sting is sore for 12 hours. I was bitten in the shoulder 9 hours ago. Within 5 or 10 minutes my lips, tongue and cheeks went numb, and I felt tingling in my feet and hands. I was also a little bit light headed. Three hours after the sting, I went to a pharmacy and received an injection for allergic reaction. It did not do much. Nine hours after the sting, my lips and cheeks and gums are still numb and I still have tingling in my feet and hands. The symptoms are not getting worse but they are not getting better either. If I am not better tomorrow morning, I may go to a doctor. Comment from: doug c., 55-64 Male (Patient) Published: March 26 I was just stung twice in the back last week by a brown scorpion. I was using an outdoor spa and dropped a robe on the ground. When I put it back on 30 minutes later the scorpion got me twice just below my right shoulder blade. My symptoms were immediate, sharp pain and numbness at the site, followed by slowly spreading pain and numbness across the upper right quarter of my back (basically the entire lateral muscle group). I took two Advil and immediately put an ice bag on the site which helped quite a bit. I did not experience any systemic effects that night but about 12 hours later I developed tingling and sharp pains on the inside of my lips and the tip of my tongue. After 36 hours all the venom was metabolized and I felt fine. I felt a little tickle in my v-line, so when I went to brush it off, I felt something stringy and nasty, so without thinking I swung whatever it was away from the bed. I turned the light on and it was a brown scorpion. Average size I guess. I squished it with my shoe but was able to keep some of the remains and put it in a zip lock bag. Now my groin is just hot and tingly, no pain thank goodness, but I know it’s there. So thankful it happened to me and not my kiddo! Comment from: ecj, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: March 17 It is called a bark scorpion. The little guy woke me up out of my sleep around 3:30 am this morning; got me on my calf. Paramedics say as long as I don't get certain symptoms I'll be fine. But I have to tough it out today because the venom spreads for hours before it starts to wear off. I was also told aspirin doesn't work for this. I can't walk on it anymore and the nice lady on the hotline said not to eat or drink anything. Comment from: Lissy, Female (Patient) Published: February 17 I was stung under my right breast by a scorpion, and today I feel very lethargic and tired. Comment from: Jay, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: August 07 I had hair loss from scorpion bite. Comment from: meg44mike, 25-34 Female (Patient) Published: May 01 We are getting our house sprayed tomorrow morning. Found 2 scorpions inside and one outside. I am seriously terrified of these things. Comment from: San Antonio, 45-54 Male (Patient) Published: September 29 I stepped on a brown scorpion in the house with bare feet. It felt like a wasp sting and made a small red bump. I put some ice on it and took some ibuprofen. The pain lasted about 1 hour but decreased quickly. Comment from: Matthew, Male (Patient) Published: September 05 I woke in the morning and had left my blue jeans overnight on the floor, which is a big mistake in Arizona). When I went to put them on, I felt several stings down my left leg thigh. I pulled off my jeans and thought maybe an ingrown hair? It was dark so couldn’t see well. I sat on the couch and once I saw several welts and sting marks I went back to the jeans, turned on a light, and shook them well. Out fell a bark scorpion about an inch long. There wasn’t terrible pain. It was more like an electric sting and tingling. I took some ibuprofen and allergy medication. It isn't too bad as I sit here typing this. I was wondering I should seek an urgent care, but I think this will pass. Hopefully these aren't my dying words. Comment from: kathynm, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: September 02 This is my second scorpion sting. The initial sting hurt. It was a sharp, acute pain. I remembered to stay calm, as getting excited causes the venom to spread faster. Comment from: 480harleygirl, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: August 19 I live in Scottsdale. I got stung by a scorpion this morning on my finger. The pain was very intense burning. I called poison control and they determined it was a bark scorpion, since it's the only one that gives a sting that develops tingling along with the pain. About two hours later, the sensations have traveled up my arm to my bicep and now my tongue and bottom lip are tingling. My throat feels strange and it’s hard to swallow. I called back to poison control, and they said that this was normal and it could take six hours or longer to subside. The site of the sting is barely visible. I didn't find him yet but I will get the black light out because I have little dogs that I am worried about. Comment from: NowImATexan, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: July 15 I've lived in Texas for 4 years now, and have seen those little scorpions all over. One of them finally got me! Doing dishes!?!? I reached down to pull the plug and BAM! It's only been an hour, and I’m not in much pain. I just have a little tingling and soreness at the site. I found the little bugger and put it in an airtight container so it can suffer along with me! Comment from: Dr navab singh, 35-44 Male (Caregiver) Published: April 30 I was bitten by a scorpion in my house. It bite on my little toe of right foot. The scorpion was small and light brown in color. I felt excruciating pain in my toe for 20-30 minutes. I washed my foot with soap and water. There was no bleeding. My toe developed little bit of swelling and there was one pin head size raised area probably indicating the site of sting. I iced it and now I feel better. Comment from: Grandma to my kids, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: March 03 I picked up a damp towel from the bathroom floor that was left overnight. I felt a very minor poke on the top of my hand. I thought something was embedded in the towel. I shook the towel and out dropped a scorpion onto the floor. My hand began to tingle like hundreds of needles poking into it as well as numbness. Pain started shortly after, but ice and Tylenol have been helping me. Comment from: Texas scorp, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: August 12 I got my sting moving firewood. It felt like a nail got pounded into my thumb. I didn't worry about it until my tongue and lips started to tingle. I took antihistamine and wondered whether to take the 35-minute trek to the nearest urgent care center. My symptoms didn't worsen, but lasted another 12 hours. If it were one of my children, we would have been in the truck right away in case the reaction became more severe. Comment from: rukittenme, 55-64 Female (Patient) Published: July 22 I was stung in the armpit while I was asleep. I was hit four times by bark scorpion. I had paralysis in both legs and arms. I was vomiting and my throat/face/tongue numbed. This happened five days ago, and ever since, I've had stinging sensations through my body. Comment from: Matt, 25-34 Male (Patient) Published: September 11 I just got nailed tonight near Tucson, AZ. We have tons of these stupid things near our house and so it was a matter of time before one got me. I picked up a piece of wood and walked about ten feet. All of a sudden I felt like I grabbed an electric wire and I dropped the wood. Luckily my wife was nearby and got out the black light. She found the SOB and we killed it. It was a bark scorpion, about 2.5 inches long. I highly advise getting a black light and spraying the inside of your house if they are nearby. They hurt like heck and you don't want little kids or your pets getting near them. Comment from: Beasle, 13-18 Female (Patient) Published: August 10 When I was in Tanzania two weeks ago, I was in a shop when something fell down my top and stung me. I felt an immediate sharp pain like someone was stabbing me in the chest with a hot needle. I had an immediate white ring swell up around the sting site and 10 minutes later the sting had swollen into a red and itchy, very painful rash. I took an antihistamine straight away and put antihistamine cream on and took some paracetamol for the pain. I'm not sure exactly what stung me, but I am pretty sure it was a scorpion. Two weeks later I still have a faint rash over the sting area, but no other symptoms. Comment from: 74 yr. old in Texas, 65-74 Female Published: July 20 I was stung by a scorpion on my forehead at 1:00 am while asleep in bed. I felt a searing burning immediately. I put ice on it, called the emergency room, told to take two antihistamines and an Advil. About 15 to 30 minutes later began to feel numbness and tingling in around my mouth/tongue area and in my hands and feet. No more symptoms occurred but almost 10 hours later I am still feeling the numbness. Called Poison Control and was told it might last 12 to 24 hours or so. Comment from: Stacey Manthei, 35-44 Female (Caregiver) Published: July 05 I was stung by a scorpion a week ago today on my big toe and I'm still having issues! It itches so bad and has little blisters all over it and when I try to scratch it I have a burning feeling! It is also still swollen on the bottom of my toe. Comment from: charisse, 45-54 Female (Patient) Published: April 30 I put on pair of pants, got sting seven times before taking the pants off. This was my second time. I knew I needed medical help. The sting is so painful and burning sensation! Comment from: Irene, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: February 13 I was stung by a brown scorpion about four hours ago in Casa Grande, Az. I tolerate pain well, but I hollered and cried off and on for a couple hours. I was bite on my right thumb and the horrible pain was like a hot rod burning for three hours. The nerves of my right arm have gradually numbed to my elbow and think it has stopped. Comment from: Beloved, 35-44 Female (Caregiver) Published: February 09 I got bit on the knuckle of my second finger of my left hand. And it felt like I got burned by a cigarette. Then it just started burning and stinging more. It was very painful and was shooting up my arm. My whole arm hurt especially the joints all the way up to my shoulder. I couldn't use my arm for few hours. My finger is still numb and frozen 31 hours later. I still can't use it. If it gets moved the wrong way it hurts. Some of my friends said their arm was out for longer. The important thing to remember is to stay calm. I found clay very helpful to draw the poison and reduce the pain at the site. I ate raw garlic for antiseptic reasons and would have taken a large dose of vitamin C if I had it. I also drank a lot of water with lime and did some hot mineral baths. Comment from: South Africa, 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: December 13 I was stung on the tip of my finger by a scorpion (species unknown), no swelling or puncture marks visible, not really painful only a strange numb tingly sensation, especially when the finger is tapped or bumped. Already 48 hours has passed and still the same sensation but not as severe as in the beginning. Comment from: cjt, 35-44 Female (Patient) Published: October 10 I stepped on a brown scorpion of average size. It stung me between the toes--a sensitive spot. The searing pain is immediate. My body numbed the area within half an hour thank goodness. I soon noticed that my lips and tip of my tongue were also numb and tingly. 12 hours later, they still are. The sting site isn't swollen or red -- just tingly and numb. Comment from: 35-44 Male (Patient) Published: July 11 I was bitten by a scorpion and I have severe pain and a tingling sensation on my leg. I was stung in the arch of my right foot. I was squeezing the area trying not to let the pain go up my leg. Every time I let go to rest, it would shoot pain up it. It hurts as if someone put a 10-inch kitchen knife in my foot and was twisting it. Comment from: G-Ma, 65-74 Female (Patient) Published: May 16 Four and a half hours after the two stings, extreme numbness in limbs, shaking of hands, cramping of legs and feet, impaired vision (especially right side), tremor in right side of face, and unable to stand.
