I had a bad infection on the side of my thumb when I was about 11, and It ballooned up. I think it’s called a Whitlow disease or something, not too sure. But anyway, ever since then my thumb nail has bowed and curled a bit at the side and also really dry. My skin around it is really tender and comes off sometimes.

Accidentally my nail came in contact with a door and complete nail got removed, with some skin. Wonder if it will grow back the same.

I banged my finger on the door, and my nail broke. Now it hurts when I touch anything. I don’t know how to make this pain go away.

I dropped a metal bed on my big toe 34 years ago. Ten years later a doctor took the nail off. All nerves under were gone. It grew back thick and crooked. Today the nail is black at the cuticle.

I trapped my big toe when I was younger and my nail came completely off. It has grown back since, but now it's starting to come off again. I hope it will grow back again if it comes off at all.

I banged my nail with an acrylic nail over it. The acrylic nail bent back and my real nail was attached to it. I cut the nail off and the nail at the cuticle is only the attached part left. I am wondering how to treat the nail bed.

I don’t know what is worse, getting your toe trapped in a car door, which cause my nail injury, or getting stitched on your big toe.

I closed a heavy door on my bare foot and have 99 percent ripped my toe nail off. I wonder if I should get it checked or if I should remove the flapping nail and manage it at home with dressings, etc.

I cut my nail while slicing food. A week has passed and the nail is thin in this area and the cut has spread out and now seems to be infected.

Many years ago my finger was slammed in a car door fracturing the tip of my finger. The nail was removed and served as a splint. My nail grew back in time but was only attached at the base and not at the top. It grew and continues to grow but now is black at the top.

I had the misfortune of hitting my thumb nail with a hammer on a construction project. The nail turned black and started to throb. I was told to hold it in sour cream, cream or whole milk. I passed this off as an old wives’ tale, but when I woke up in the middle of the night with a throbbing thumb I decided to try it. I poured a small glass of milk and held my thumb in it. After about 10 minutes the pain was gone. I had to do it again about 2 to 3 hours later. The pain was gone and the nail grew off naturally. Sounds stupid, but let me assure you it works wonderfully without punching a hole in your nail.

I have two nails on one hand that started turning reddish purple at the nail bed/cuticle. Then my little finger had a hole and I can't tell if the nail is going to grow back. It also seems like it is trying to get infected with a small spot of red just past the cuticle. My thumb is not near as bad. I have not injured it I do not use manicures, and do not bite my nails. I simply do not know what happened. I cannot see a dermatologist until the end of January. This started a month ago. I have been putting an ointment on it.

I was hit on my big toe with a golf ball. It took a few years for the damage to really show. Now I have a hole in the nail. It will take nail polish but it shows a little lumpy. If I cut the loose part, it bleeds. When I have a pedicure, I have them leave that nail alone.

I dropped a full 28-oz stainless steel bottle directly on my big toe. Within hours the nail had turned blue and was bleeding out of the perimeter of the nail. It has now been two days since the injury. The toe is moderately swollen and the bottom of the nail seems to be pushing against the swollen cuticle area, which is the most sensitive of all the rest of the nail/toe. There is blood at the base of the cuticle. I've soaked it in Epsom salts twice a day, and put antibacterial ointment on it and kept it clean and covered.

I slammed my thumb in a car door a week ago. The nail is a blackish purple color. There is a half ring shape of red speckled stuff around the pad and just below the cuticle is extremely swollen. I can feel the nail is loose and is about to fall out.

My kitten grabbed for my finger and stuck her claw into my cuticle about a week ago. It bled some and I washed it with warm water put anti-biotic ointment on the site. It is quite sensitive to touch and warm water. It is a little swollen at the site of the trauma but so far no visible infection.

I sliced the lower quarter of my index fingernail off with kitchen mandolin. The piece of nail is still attached at cuticle.

I used acrylic nails for years until recently when I decided to stop. Now my nails are splitting, even when grown out some.

While holding on to the inside door handle passenger side car door, I took a fall and ripped half of my right-hand thumbnail off and fractured the tip of my thumb. The nail is now growing under the old nail and is growing a huge lump under the portion of the old nail which has not fallen off .

I thought I had a fungal infection, I was treating it with a nail vanish medicine the doctor prescribed me, I filled it every other day for a while. I wasn't getting any better. In fact, it was getting worse. I found out it wasn't a fungal infection and ever since my nail hasn't grown back. It no longer sticks to the skin and is white. It looks disgusting especially as it on the corner of my thumb. It's been like it for a number of years. It grows, but it’s very brittle.

I jammed the tip of my right index finger between two pavers as I was stacking them. There was excruciating pain and significant bruising. It is now two weeks later and the swelling is reduced, pain gone, but fingernail is about 2/3rds detached and on its way 'off.'

My nail was injured when the garage door closed on my fingertip.

I slammed the car door on my thumb. It hurt like crazy! The whole finger was red and swollen for two days and then stopped hurting completely. My nail was purple and yellow striped, but I didn't think it would fall off. Nine weeks later it started to catch on things, and loosen from the nail bed. I covered it with two bandages and inadvertently covered the nail with the sticky part. When I removed it, half of my nail came with it. I covered it with gauze and the tip of a latex glove. After 2-3 days, it was lifting up almost completely, attached only partially on one side. Looking at it I realized what no one had told me, the new little half moon growth had PUSHED it off! I cut most off with a scissor, what a relief. Now I am trying to find advice on having it grow back healthy, and not permanently deformed looking as my husband says it might.

My 11-year-old daughter just injured her finger walking through the doorway. Her right thumbnail was bent back and she had to put it back down. It is causing her a great amount of pain and throbbing.

About two months ago a shopping cart slammed on top of my left big toe. The nail did crack but I kept it clean. It stopped hurting after a couple days and my nail has grown normally since, just that the bruise won't go away. It doesn't hurt but it is bruised more than 25% and it’s kind of freaking me out since it’s been so long.

My toe nails on both big toes have redness just beneath the edge of nail under the nail. It is not a large area, just a narrow strip. At times after walking, my nails burn and throb. There is no discharge. I believe it was caused by a pedicure where nails were cut too close. I am now wearing Birkenstocks so toes do not hit end of shoe.

My pinky fingernail began to lift from the skin starting at tip of the nail. It is slowly moving to the nail bed. This has occurred over a 4 week period and is now lifted about halfway between the tip and the bed. I never bruised it, hit it or injured it. Neither the nail nor skin under the nail is discolored in any way.

The cause of my nail injury was basketball. While I was playing, a girl stepped on my foot and since then my nail has been falling off every three months.

I drove a philips head screwdriver through my thumb nail and ripped the bottom of the nail off. Now I have "meat" squishing up through the opening and it looks like its about to pop. All bleeding has stopped, unless I bang it into things (which I do all the time).
