I have had episodes of cluster headache for 30 years. Neither verapamil nor amitriptyline had preventive effect. Oxygen sometimes aborted attacks. Injections of sumatriptan aborted attacks but gave no prevention. Oral sumatriptan was too slow to have effect on an attack but physicians persisted in prescribing it. Trigger point needling worked sometimes. The best treatment for my migraine was a half 2.5 mg tablet of naratriptan taken three times a day at 8 hour intervals. It had good preventive effect and the cluster terminated after several weeks treatment.
