I noticed a small, dark mole on the back of my right calf when drying off after a swim. I saw my dermatologist as soon as possible. He told me it was probably nothing, but I insisted it be removed because I had previously had squamous cell carcinoma. It was melanoma. I had a wide area excision and no other treatment other than 6 month follow-up appointments for 5 years. I was seen at a cancer teaching hospital because of a strong family history of cancer [pancreatic father (age 70) and brother (50); colon mother (76)].

Over several years, and visits to a dermatologist, I was told I had lichen planus. Years later, several biopsies revealed I had T-cell melanoma.
