I have had recurring bouts of ocular herpes for 30 years. I was finally seen at the hospital. They have me on acyclovir 400 mg twice a day and I put a steroid drop in my eye 3 times a week. I have not had an outbreak in a couple years. Keeping stress down helps. If I am stressed I up my medications. The pain is so intense. It feels like ground glass in my eye being stirred with an ice pick. Sunlight makes this worse with the addition of hot oil being poured on the eye. That's how mine feels. I have lost half of my vision in that eye.

About 50 years ago, my optical herpes began with an outbreak of herpetic ulcerations on both my eyelids while fighting a fevered viral infection. Dendritic corneal ulcers were identified and treated. No medications were available at that time. I continue to have several outbreaks a year, less severe since using daily doses of acyclovir. Eye damage has fortunately been confined to some scar tissue on each cornea! I think this is due to vigilance of outbreaks and good physician care.

I am positive for HSV-2 and am having eye pain. I'm wondering if it could be herpes.
