My husband was given memantine titration pack for forgetfulness. This medicine comes in graduated doses over 4 weeks and then continues at the 4 week level. A few days or so after starting the medicines, my husband developed Parkinson’s like jerking body movements of his arms and legs so bad that I had to take him to the emergency room. This continued for 3 weeks until I realized these symptoms started soon after taking the medicine. Our pharmacist found that these symptoms were a rare reaction to this drug. Our neurologist has used memantine for at least 1000 patients and had never had anyone displaying this body jerking. The medicines were stopped after 3 weeks, but 5 months later, he still has the body jerking movements. We see the neurologist in 2 days.
