My healthy 11 year old daughter complained of a headache last year. Actually, it was a pain around her right eye. The next day, the pain moved to her head above the eye. I took her to the doctor who said it was an acute headache/possible migraine and sent us home. Headache progressed with vomiting and lethargy. I took her to her pediatrician 2 days later. When my daughter said she couldn't touch her chin to her chest because of the pain in her head, we were sent to the emergency room. A CT scan was performed and a large epidural abscess was seen causing mid line shift to the brain. Emergency craniotomy was performed to remove the abscess, followed up by antibiotics.

I had surgery for a streptococcal frontal lobe cyst about 10 years ago. While it saved my life, I did suffer from substantial brain damage that has impacted my life profoundly. Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better if it had been fatal.
